“Pick a format and get to work”! That's one of my favorite sayings at West West Side Music. Many musicians (and their engineers and producers) get caught up in the belief that their artistic success is dependent upon the use of a particular set of tools or procedures - especially, it seems, by the tools and procedures that are used by their peers. Tools are important. But the ART, comes from how you use these tools, to craft your vision!
But, musicians are not always artists.
A core concept of art is expressing yourself. It has to do with identifying yourself with uniqueness - a distinctive quality. It would seem that with the ever-increasing number of ways to manipulate audio, it would be easy for musicians to be artists. But that is not always the case.
What are you doing to make people think? What are you doing to raise the consciousness of your audience? There’s nothing wrong with entertainment. But truly great artists have the ability to entertain, and inform in a creative way. But here’s the catch... It’s not easy. It takes work.
I just saw J Robbins and Jawbox perform on the “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vnsd9CEeSWo). I suggest you watch and listen to this artist “closely”. J defines what it is to truly be an artist. Thank you J. You inspire me!
